Cooperativa Agraria de Servicios Multiples Selva Andina - Finanzierung der Kaffee-Ernte
Cooperativa Agraria de Servicios Multiples Selva Andina
Financing the coffee harvest
Fair trade
Trade in products that have been certified and carry a fair trade label. An example of this is a farmer’s cooperative that collectively sells its cocoa to a fair trade organization.Asociación de Productores Cafetaleros Selva Andina is an association of 442 small-scale farmers, with an average plot of three hectares and no access to local banking. The association is located in the province of Jaen in Northeast Peru. Its main activity is the collection and sale of fair trade coffee. Currently, around 80% of production is organically certified.
As a country, Peru has been enjoying several consecutive years of economic growth, but almost a third of the population still live in poverty. The province of Jaen is a predominantly rural province, with two thirds of its people living in rural areas. One third of the population live in poverty, with two-thirds of those living in extreme poverty.
Oikocredit is supporting Selva Adina as it acknowledges and values their care for the environment and their efforts to raise the living standards of their members.
This loan will enable Selva Andina to finance the next coffee harvest and pay their members a fair price for their produce. By putting their harvest in the cooperative's hands, they can negotiate as a group and get a good price for their harvests on the international market.
